Multidimensional Mobility Metric for Continuous Gait Monitoring using a Single Accelerometer
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mobility has been measured in the form of gait analysis – a method used to assess the physical functioning of a human. Many health-related clinical and pathological gait analysis applications have been proposed in the last decades. Gait analysis research has been predominantly conducted in laboratories in a discipline-specific manner. The main measurement approach is to monitor intrinsic gait patterns in natural settings such as home or work. Our proposed mobility assessment approach is to assess gait along three major gait dimensions: intensity, symmetry, and variability. This multidimensional metric uses a single accelerometer to assess the three dimensions so that the gait metric is continuously applied to mimic the natural human gait in daily life. Initial experimental results demonstrate its practical use in different gait patterns with various gait speeds.

Gait segmentation using continuous wavelet transform for extracting validated gait events from accelerometer signals
In our aging society, gait disturbance becomes a major concern as it inevitably leads to limitations in mobility and to an increased risk of falls. Spontaneous walking speed normally decreases by about 1% per year from age 60 onward [1]. A population-based study has shown a 35% prevalence of gait disorders among persons over age 70 [2], and some abnormal gait features can be predictive of a pro...

A study was conducted to assess how a new metric, average in-home gait speed (AIGS), measured using a low-cost, continuous, environmentally mounted monitoring system, compares to a set of traditional physical performance instruments used for mobility and fall risk assessment of elderly adults. Sixteen participants were recruited from a local independent living facility. In addition to having th...

INTRODUCTION Accelerometers are becoming an increasingly important tool in the study of human movement. Their ease and affordability, combined with the potential to collect large amounts of continuous data outside the laboratory setting makes them excellent tools for gait analysis. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of a single tri-axial accelerometer in measuring mean spatiotemporal p...

Many gait analysis applications involve long-term or continuous monitoring which require gait measurements to be taken outdoors. Wearable inertial sensors like accelerometers have become popular for such applications as they are miniature, low-powered and inexpensive but with the drawback that they are prone to noise and require robust algorithms for precise identification of gait events. Howev...

Accelerometer-based gait recognition for mobile healthcare systems has became an attractive research topic in the past years. However, a major bottleneck of such system is it requires continuous sampling of accelerometer, which reduces battery life of wearable sensors. In this paper, we present KEHGait, which advocates use of output voltage signal from kinetic energy harvester (KEH) as the sour...
